Movie Review - "Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story"

Behold, bask in all the glory that is "Walk Hard - The Dewey Cox Story." The latest in the John C. Reilly / Will Ferrell comedic performance series was released in 2007 to mixed reviews. My personal view on the movie is about that as well. I thought it was funny at times and truthfully, the more I see it, the funnier and/or more stupid it becomes. Produced and co-wrote by the 21st century's uber producer/director, Judd Apatow, "Walk Hard"; Apatow weilds his normal brand of crude and gross-out comedy to the film. An array of cameos by other stars are in usual Apatow fashion. Stars like Frankie Muniz, Jack White, Jack Black, Paul Ruud, Justin Long, and Jonah Hill are just a few to appear in the film. Not stating that the cameos are underused, or unworthy, but the high note appears to be not including Will Ferrell. I know, Ferrell is a comedy genius and a devoted follower of USC Trojan football, and he is loved by all. I can accept that and just be proud that he isn't in the film. I don't think he is an Apatow usual, but merely a sidekick to Reilly. Normally, where one is, the other isn't far behind.

What is understood to be a mockery of many famous musicians and their troubled lives, Dewey takes it upon himself to harbour the demons of each one of those troubles. Starting the film by showing an overshadowed Dewey Cox with his prodigy brother Nate shows the roots for Dewey's demons. Always underappreciated by his father, as a second, dumber child, Dewey struggles for the love of his father throughout the movie. This love was torn after Dewey and Nate were playing with machetes and Nate was cut in half. I think the funniest parts are the ones where the characters declare their ages, which happen to be clearly a farce. Kristin Wiig, (Saturday Night Live's Target Girl), plays the part of Dewey's first girlfriend Edith, 12 year-old girlfriend to be exact. Edith is the subject of Dewey's first performance at his high school talent show. The crowd erupts into a riot because of the inuendos the song, "I Want to Hold Your Hand" supposedly suggests. You can take that as just being slapstick, but it probably was a poke at the older generation for creating such a fuss about Elvis Presley's hip-shaking during his early career.

Dewey and Edith are banned from the Cox household and move out on their own where a viewer can only assume they are married. Already raising one child, Edith appears to procreate at the speed of a pet rabbit only to be left by Dewey, in pursuit of fortune and fame from his singing and songwriting. Edith is blatant in her disgust for Dewey's lifestyle and touring. Dewey dabbles in marijuana, cocaine and other heavy drugs to try and suppress his hate and despair. During a sound check, Dewey is introduced to a young singer named Darlene Madison, played by Jenna Fischer. Darlene and Dewey go throughout the movie dropping inuendos that only the mildly retarded would confuse with comedy. Dewey enjoys the talk from Darlene and after a late night snuggle on the band's tour bus, Dewey realizes that he must marry Darlene to, how would we say it, show her the Big Bopper. The couple marry and as they are about to consumate the holy union, Edith storms in for a visit. Dewey ends up losing both women because the plot was so stupid, I mean, he lost them because he was legally still married to Edith and polygamy is only legal in certain parts of Utah.

The movie then bounces in so many directions, the viewers need fucking OnStar or a Tom Tom to get them to the end. I will try to dummy this down for you though:
  • Dewey loses Edith and Darlene
  • Dewey takes more drugs
  • Darlene comes back
  • Dewey dabbles in the drugs some more
  • Dewey gets busted buying drugs
  • Dewey loses Darlene, again
  • Dewey meets his 20 or so kids, and plays catch with them (What The Fuck?)
  • Dewey gets old, stops taking drugs
  • Dewey gets Darlene back...again, and the movie ends with him playing some awards show with his final masterpiece

Some of the less important parts of the movie are behind the scenes and items that are touched on very little in the movie. These are funny, but not really deal makers. What I'm saying is that it would take an Act of God to get this movie out of the gutter. My problem: I like the gutter sometimes...Juuuust Sometimes.

The Mystery Identity of Elvis in the Movie

Now this is a story. The man pictured below is singer/songwriter/eccentric/actor Jack White of the band The White Stripes. We have reason to believe that Mr. White has doubled his lifestyle and had been seen in a small town in Georgia, playing the drums (His first wife Meg taught him to play). You let us here at The Purveyor know if you have any tips on these sightings. We have found one picture of which I have enclosed. If you have tips please call 1.800.328.7448 (Don't call that number, it is a fucking joke. But, figure out the number and leave it in the comments.)

Careful, That bitch knows Ka-Rate

It's a mystery. Is it Jack White, who effing knows? Where are the drums?

People, you might want to factor in that Jay Cutler has taken up playing the drums too. (Interesting)

Even though we may have a Jack White or Jay Cutler on loose in southern Georgia, which I really doubt, that does not erase the utter fact that this movie somewhat sucks. I mean, yeah the first time I saw it, it was pretty funny. I do like all the normal cameos of other stars and I think it is ironic that Eddie Vedder's most recent public appearance was in that movie. All in all, I can stand to watch it again. Truthfully, over and over again. As far as buying it, nah. It will be in the $5 clearance bin within a calendar year. Hey, I know, most of my bought movies, full price I might add, end up there. Futhermore, I'll let a picture do the talking for my decision. Which brings me to mind, I have to find one for the movies I like.

Yeah, Not a compliment
